How to Fix Separation Anxiety in Dogs: A Step-by-Step Plan

The step-by-step method that helps most dogs with separation anxiety: the coverage plan, the camera test, and short daily absences that end before stress.

Separation anxiety isn't fixed with a better chew toy. It's fixed by teaching your dog, in very small steps, that being alone is safe. Here's the order that works for most dogs.

Step 1: Stop the daily panics

Every panic is practice. If your dog panics every workday, the fear grows, no matter what training you do in the evening.

So for a few weeks, avoid leaving your dog alone longer than they can handle. Mix remote days, a friend or neighbor, a "dog swap" with another owner, daycare or a sitter. It doesn't have to be perfect, just good enough. How to do it with a full-time job.

Step 2: Measure your dog's starting point

Do the 5-minute camera test: leave normally, watch live, and come back at the first sign of stress. That's your dog's stress time. Your starting comfort time is about half of it.

Step 3: Make leaving cues boring

Pick up your keys and sit back down. Put on your shoes and watch TV. Ten times a day. Within a week, many dogs stop reacting to the cues that used to start the panic.

Step 4: One short absence a day

Start where your dog is green, even if that's opening the door and closing it again. Seconds count.

Step 5: Keep a log

Write down planned time, actual time and the first stress sign. Progress is a zig-zag; the log shows the trend on bad days.

When to call your vet

If your dog injures themselves, won't eat, or progress stalls for weeks, talk to your veterinarian. For many dogs, medication prescribed by a vet makes training possible.

Quick answers

What is the fastest way to fix separation anxiety in dogs?

There's no shortcut, but the fastest reliable path is to stop over-long absences while you train and practice short daily absences that always end before your dog gets stressed.

Should I ignore my dog when I leave and come home?

Keep goodbyes and hellos calm and boring. Say hi once your dog has settled. Big emotional departures and returns make leaving a bigger event.

How many training sessions a day for separation anxiety?

One focused absence session a day, about 5 days a week, is enough for most dogs. Add short leaving-cue practice throughout the day.
