Separation Anxiety in Dogs: 10 Signs (and How to Tell It From Boredom)

The 10 most common signs of separation anxiety in dogs, the simple camera test that confirms it, and how to tell panic from boredom or noise reactivity.

You come home to a chewed door frame, a puddle by the entrance and a neighbor who mentions "the howling." Is it separation anxiety, or is your dog just bored?

The difference matters, because the fixes are completely different.

The 10 most common signs

  1. Barking, howling or whining that starts within minutes of you leaving.
  2. Scratching or chewing doors, door frames and windows (exit points), not random objects.
  3. Accidents in the house from a dog who's fully house-trained.
  4. Pacing in a fixed path or circles.
  5. Drooling or heavy panting when it isn't hot.
  6. Escape attempts: bent crate bars, broken teeth, bloody paws or nose.
  7. Refusing food while alone, then eating when you're back.
  8. Following you from room to room and getting upset when you get ready to leave (keys, shoes, coat).
  9. An over-the-top greeting when you come home, long after you've arrived.
  10. Trembling or hiding as you prepare to leave.

One or two of these doesn't mean separation anxiety. A pattern of several, every time you leave, usually does.

The camera test: the only way to know

Set up a phone video call or a pet camera you can watch live. Leave like normal and watch from outside. Note the time of the first stress sign: staring at the door, pacing, a soft whine. Go back in calmly before it turns into panic.

What to do next

If it's separation anxiety, the plan is: stop the daily panics (cover longer absences for a few weeks), measure how long your dog can stay relaxed, then build alone time in small steps. Here's how that works, step by step.

Quick answers

What are the first signs of separation anxiety in a dog?

Barking or howling within minutes of you leaving, scratching at doors or windows, accidents in a house-trained dog, pacing, drooling and refusing food while alone. Getting upset when you pick up keys or shoes is another early sign.

How do I know if my dog has separation anxiety or is just bored?

Watch one absence on a live camera. Anxious dogs show stress within minutes and focus on exits. Bored dogs are calm at first and get into things later.

Can separation anxiety in dogs be cured?

Most dogs improve a lot with gradual, reward-based training that keeps every absence shorter than the dog can handle. Severe cases often do better with help from a veterinarian.
